Interesting facts:
When the US Air Force was looking for a successor to the F-15 fighter, it announced a competition in 1981 for the development of a fifth-generation fighter with sufficiently advanced capabilities to maintain air superiority for several decades.
The winning design came from a consortium of Lockheed, Boeing, and General Dynamics under the designation YF-22.
The aircraft was first presented to the public in 1997 and immediately caused a tremendous stir. Thanks to the extensive use of composite materials and the shape of the fuselage, it looked like something not from this planet.
In the same month, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Defense in Moscow with representatives of the Russian aviation industry in response to the presentation of the new American F-22. Intelligence services were tasked with gathering as much information as possible to begin developing their own 5th generation aircraft. Russian technology was hopelessly outdated, and it took another 13 years before the first flight of the Su-57 fighter took place.
Proof that the American fighter was ahead of its time is the fact that similar aircraft, whether of Russian or Chinese design, are more or less copies of the F-22.
The US government initially planned to produce 750 units, but with the end of the Cold War, the number was reduced several times to a final 195 aircraft.
The last one was produced in July 2011.
Since the development costs were divided among the 195 units produced, it is the most expensive fighter aircraft in human history.
The F-22 is literally packed with ultra-modern technologies, such as the APG-77 radar, fuselage detector with 30 antennas, AAR-56 warning system, and powerful Pratt & Whitney engine.
Exact specifications are still a state secret according to federal law H.AMDT-295.
Japan, Israel, and Australia also showed interest in modern fighters, but sales outside the USA were never approved.
The development of the F-22 successor is already underway under the designation NGAD. The first 3 prototypes of the 6th generation fighter were tested in 2023. Since everything is conducted under strict secrecy, no further information is available.
