The first serial machines Fokker Dr.I arrived at the front on October 11, 1917 and the very next day the first aircraft was ready for takeoff. Although the Fokker Dr.I became an icon of the First World War, it had many technical shortcomings. Its triplane construction allowed for exceptional maneuverability, but speed and dive were weaker.

The rotary engine allowed pilots to literally "turn on a dime," but the aircraft suffered failures due to poor load distribution and wing covering issues. The lack of castor oil during the war led to the use of substitute lubricants, which often caused engine failures.

The machine gained its legendary reputation thanks to Manfred von Richthofen, who achieved 80 kills before a fatal bullet from Australian infantry hit him during a risky flight. His red machine was not painted at his request, but directly in production.

After the arrival of more modern aircraft, the Dr.I was gradually phased out and used as training machines. A total of 320 pieces were produced.

Manfred von Richthofen for the propaganda newspaper Vossische Zeitung March 1918:
I was born to fly, but my path to the cockpit was not direct. Respecting family tradition, I joined the cavalry. Already in the first weeks of the war, it became clear how ineffective cavalry was in modern warfare, and our regiment was disbanded. I was transferred to a warehouse. Yes, for a few weeks I did oversee cheese and egg supplies, but it wasn't for me. Finally, in 1915, my request to join the Luftstreikräfte was granted. The rest you probably know...
