Interesting facts:
» The development of the mobile rocket launcher began as early as 1933, in a truly Russian way.
» Initially, a scientific research institute for jet propulsion was established to have a project to shoot at, and one of the designers, Georgy E. Langemak, was executed in a staged trial. Without this, it would not have been possible in Russia.
» The first rockets used were modified unguided RS-82 missiles launched from the air, which later became the M-13 Katyusha and M-31 Vanyusha rockets.
» The Lafette rocket launcher was easily installed on various chassis from tanks, armored trains to naval ships and trucks due to its simplicity.
» The most famous chassis were the ZIS-5 trucks and especially the ZIS-6, manufactured by the Zavod imeni Stalin factory, later called ZIL.
» Initially, the salvo rocket launchers were deployed in strict secrecy, and the crew consisted of the most reliable soldiers of the NKVD special units.
» The very first combat deployment of the Katyusha took place on July 14, 1941, near the town of Rudnaya during the shelling of a railway transshipment point. The nickname Stalin's organs became popular here due to the typical whistling sound of the launched rockets.
» Despite the great inaccuracy of the shooting, the destructive power of the Katyushas was extremely high.
» The salvo rocket launchers had weak or no armor and no active protection, making them an easy target for the German air force. Two-thirds of all deployed Katyushas were thus destroyed.
» Approximately 100,000 units were produced in various versions at the Voronezh manufacturing plant.
