Mustang, although an American aircraft, was created based on the request of the British RAF. Designers from North American Aviation managed to design it in an incredible 120 days, and it had its first flight on October 26, 1940 – only 178 days after ordering.

Gradually, the Mustang became one of the most successful Allied fighters of World War II. Initially, it bore the names Apache and Invader, but among pilots, the name Mustang prevailed.

Mustang pilots introduced a new tactic of bomber protection, attacking enemy fighters during their formation for attack instead of holding formation. Herman Göring reportedly declared after seeing the Mustang over Berlin: "We lost the war."

The most successful Mustang pilot was George Earl Preddy, and another legend was William Arthur "Gravedigger" Shomo, who shot down 6 aircraft in a single day. The P‑51 Mustang remains the fastest piston-engine fighter to this day, with a top speed reaching up to 885 km/h.

A total of 15,875 units were produced in various versions, and the aircraft served until 1984 in the Dominican Republic. Many of them are still in flying condition today.

From the memories of American flying ace George E. Preddy:

It was a perfect aircraft. It was very agile, had excellent performance, and was very accurate. With it, I was able to shoot down 27 enemy aircraft and became the most successful Mustang fighter. It was adventurous, but also sad.
