Designer Reginald J. Mitchell began working on the new fighter in 1931. After many modifications, the legendary Spitfire was created, becoming a symbol of the British Air Force in World War II, although the most numerous was still the Hawker Hurricane.
The first Spitfire was commissioned on August 4, 1938, with the 19th Squadron RAF. New aircraft were initially delivered slowly – only one piece per week. During the first flights, pilots even had to swear not to forget to lower the landing gear before landing, which was unnecessary on older machines.
Aircraft N3200 had its first action on April 19, 1940, with pilot Geoffrey Stephenson. A few weeks later, it was hit over Dunkirk and made an emergency landing on the German side. The aircraft gradually sank into the sand and was discovered only in 1986. After thorough renovation, it flies again and can be seen today at the Imperial War Museum Duxford.

From the memoirs of Field Marshal Harold R. L. Alexander:
That guy in the Spitfire flying over our heads must have been a bit crazy, or he didn't understand what fear was, but his courage saved dozens of lives. I only learned much later after the war that his name was Geoffrey D. Stephenson when he became the personal pilot of the queen.
