Interesting facts:
Designer Reginald J. Mitchell began working on a new fighter according to RAF specifications as early as 1931.
Eventually, after many modifications, perhaps the most famous fighter of World War II was created, but the Hawker Hurricane was still the most numerous aircraft in the RAF's arsenal.
The very first Spitfire was commissioned on August 4, 1938, in the 19th Fighter Squadron of the RAF. For the first time, the pilot had to swear not to forget to lower the landing gear when landing, which pilots were not accustomed to with older aircraft.
The Spitfire aircraft was characterized by the very first use of flush rivets to maintain a low wing profile and many other technologies that were modern at the time.
German aircraft were also very good, but they lacked one essential thing, the extraordinarily reliable and powerful legendary Rolls-Royce engine.
Bubbletop machines received a drop-shaped cockpit cover for better pilot visibility. Pilots initially rejected the new cockpit shape, but mission experiences showed the advantages of this design.
In total, more than 24 versions of the Mk.XVI Bubbletop were produced, with a total of 1,211 units manufactured. 60 airworthy machines are still in operation today.
