Interesting facts:
The US Navy ordered the construction of the ship at the New York Navy Yard shipyard as early as March 4, 1913, at a cost equivalent to today's approximately €263,374,485.
The construction took 27 months, and on June 19, 1915, it was ceremoniously launched in the presence of prominent Prescott citizen Miss Esther Ross.
The ship's designers opted for an unusual armor called all or nothing, which meant strong double armor for important parts, while other parts of the ship were armored only weakly or not at all.
USS Arizona has an interesting and sad history. At the end of World War I, it carried US President Woodrow Wilson to the peace conference in Paris. In the 1930s, the ship underwent extensive reconstruction and was subsequently assigned to Chester Nimitz's 1st Division based in Pearl Harbor.
Pearl Harbor is also its final and eternal destination, as USS Arizona was destroyed during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. Today, there is a memorial to fallen soldiers above the ship's sinking site. One of the rare exhibits of the memorial is the famous ship's bell from USS Arizona, whose sound on December 7, 1941, signaled an alarm until an 800-kilogram aerial bomb hit the deck.
To this day, black spots of oil and diesel occasionally appear on the surface above the sinking site, and legend has it that the ship sheds black tears and will not stop until the last living man from the ship Arizona, Ken Potts (who will turn 101 in 2022), is alive.
