Interesting facts:
The IOWA class ships built between 1940 and 1950 were probably the best battleships ever deployed in the last years of World War II. The most advanced technology of that time, powerful turbines, and armament were crucial, especially in the Pacific.
Designer A. I. Chantry intended to build the largest ship of that time, mainly to deter Japan. However, he was ultimately limited by the 33.5 m width of the Panama Canal locks during development.
USS Missouri was ceremonially launched on January 29, 1944, and became the last completed ship of the IOWA class.
The first mission of USS Missouri was to protect the aircraft carrier USS Lexington near the Caroline Islands.
The ships had a triple bottom that served as a tank for fresh water and fuel.
The engine room was equipped with a desalination device with an incredible capacity of 227,000 gallons in 24 hours.
Artillery shells were colored to identify which ship was firing in case of a group attack. For USS Missouri, it was red.
The Japanese surrender was signed on the deck of USS Missouri.
Missouri participated in the battles for Okinawa during World War II, as well as the Korean War and, after refurbishment in 1984, the Gulf War.
USS Missouri was definitively decommissioned from the US armament on March 31, 1992.
A naval museum was established on the ship, which is conditional on the vessels being returned to the American military in case of national threat.
On April 11, 1945, a Japanese kamikaze pilot attacked USS Missouri by crashing into the deck near the fuel tanks. The impact caused only a small dent, which is still visible on the ship today.
Captain of USS Missouri William M. Callaghan ordered the Japanese pilot to be buried with full military honors. The reason was probably an attempt to show the world that Americans are not barbarians, unlike Japanese brutality. However, the crew carried this decision with great reluctance.
There is also a story associated with USS Missouri from the Vietnam War. During a dark night, a small Vietnamese minesweeper operated in coastal waters. The crew had no idea about the presence of American military vessels. When the minesweeper's radar detected the presence of a foreign ship, it radioed: Identify yourself, or we will start shooting. After a short silence, the response came: USS Missouri. You can shoot if you want.
