Hawker Hurricane – British legend of World War II
The Hawker Hurricane was developed in the mid-1930s under the leadership of designer Sydney Camm, who advocated for a modern monoplane at a time when British command still preferred biplanes. The first flight took place in November 1935, and serial production began in 1936.
By the end of production in 1944, 14,533 units were produced in various versions. Although often overshadowed by the more famous Spitfire, the Hurricane played a significant role in the defense of Britain – destroying up to 60% of enemy Luftwaffe aircraft during the Battle of Britain.
It was also used by Czechoslovak and Polish pilots. The 302nd Polish Squadron RAF, whose version is captured in this building set, was a significant unit. Its pilot Wacław Król became a fighter ace with 286 missions.
