Interesting facts:
» The IOWA class ships built between 1940 and 1950 were probably the best battleships ever deployed in the last years of World War II.
» The most advanced technology of the time, powerful turbines, and armament were key, especially in the Pacific.
» Designer A. I. Chantry was limited by the width of the 33.5 m Panama Canal locks during development.
» The ships had a triple bottom that served as a tank for fresh water and fuel.
» The engine room was equipped with a desalination device with a staggering capacity of 227,000 liters in 24 hours.
» Artillery shells were color-coded according to which ship fired them (Iowa = yellow, New Jersey = blue, Missouri = red, Wisconsin = green).
» The successor class Montana never emerged because the way of naval warfare completely changed.
» The IOWA class consisted of a total of 6 vessels: USS Iowa, USS New Jersey, USS Missouri, USS Wisconsin, USS Illinois, and USS Kentucky. The last two ships were never completed.
» In the fall of 1943, the ship Iowa transported American President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Casablanca for the Tehran Conference, where discussions were held about opening the western front.
» The Japanese surrender was signed on board the USS Missouri.
Iowa participated in the battles for Okinawa during World War II, as well as in the Korean War and after refurbishment in 1984 in the Gulf War.
» The last ship, USS Missouri, was definitively retired from the American arsenal on March 31, 1992.
» A naval museum was established on three ships, which, however, is subject to the condition of returning the vessels to the American military in case of national threat.
» USS Iowa suffered an accident on April 19, 1989, when ammunition exploded near the main gun turret. The cause of the accident was never discovered.
» In 1958, the American Navy command considered converting some ships into nuclear missile ships. The Navy presented this concept to the acting President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He quietly read the plans, looked at the minister, and said: Boys, do you really want to send 2,000 sailors with a 270-meter ship to enemy shores to launch a missile? Wouldn't one bomber with a three-man crew be enough? The project was unanimously canceled on the spot.
