Lockheed P-38 Lightning – „Fork-tailed devil“ of the American Air Force
The development of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning arose as a response to the American Air Force's requirement for a powerful combat aircraft capable of achieving high speeds even at great altitudes. Most companies rejected the project, but young designer Kelly Johnson from Lockheed accepted the challenge and created a unique design with two fuselages and a central cockpit.
The first flight took place on January 27, 1939, and the aircraft immediately demonstrated extraordinary potential. Due to its silhouette and performance, the Germans nicknamed it the „Fork-tailed devil“. P‑38 aircraft were deployed as fighters, bombers, reconnaissance aircraft, and fighter escorts.
It was flown by the most successful American pilots of World War II, including Richard Bong, Thomas McGuire, and John Loisel. The famous Antoine de Saint-Exupéry also flew a reconnaissance version, who disappeared during a mission over France in 1944.
By 1945, 9,923 units were produced, and some aircraft served in smaller air forces until 1965.

From the memories of Captain John S. Loisel:
„When you fly on a mission, you have two options. Either you keep replaying thoughts of what, how, if, why, etc., in your head and go crazy from it, or you just aim for the main enemy formation, ignore the individual pilots, and dive into the biggest cluster you see.“
