In 1941, 3 companies competed for the government contract for the American army: American Bantam, Willys-Overlan, and Ford Motors.
The competition was eventually won by Willys Overland Motors Ltd. because they offered a price of only 739 USD, thus beginning the famous era of Jeep.
While Willys supplied vehicles for the American army, American companies Bantam and Ford received orders from the Soviet Union and Great Britain.
The demand for off-road vehicles was so great that Willys' capacity was insufficient even after repeated increases, so part of the production was moved to Ford's factories under the Ford GPW brand.
