The decision to develop a heavy tank destroyer was given to the German company Krupp in August 1942. Development under wartime conditions proceeded quickly, and by December 20, 1943, the prototype was presented to Hitler as a Christmas gift. Serial production began at the beginning of 1944, at a time when the German industry was already facing a shortage of raw materials of all kinds. A quality, heavily armed, agile, and well-armored machine was built on the proven chassis of the Panther tank.
The Jadgpanther was factory-painted with a thick layer of anti-magnetic coating Zimmerit, although the Red Army had practically no magnetic anti-tank mines, or only a negligible amount of the captured type HHL3.
Jagdpanther was the answer to the quality allied armored vehicles deployed in Normandy, but later most of the produced units went to the Eastern Front.
The installed PAK 43 gun was a real threat due to its high shooting accuracy. The probability of hitting a target on the battlefield with dimensions of 2.5 × 2 m at a distance of 1000 m was 85% and at a distance of 2000 m 43%.
The effectiveness of the Jagdpanther was well documented during operations on the Eastern Front when Schwere Panzerjager Abteilng 563 destroyed a total of 58 Soviet tanks in 10 days.
The tank destroyer also had a weak point, the first produced units required the removal of the gun for mechanics to access the gearbox.
A total of 415 units were produced in several versions.
Currently, there are three functional machines in the world.
