Interesting facts:
» The founder of the design bureau Alexander Yakovlev made many trips to England, Italy, and Germany before World War II to gain the information and knowledge needed for the construction and development of modern high-performance aircraft.
» The Yak-1 model was created in the design bureau of A. S. Yakovlev based on a competition announced in 1938.
» The prototype designated I-26.1 first flew on January 1, 1940. It immediately became apparent that the designed 3 m diameter propeller overloaded the engine, which stalled five times during tests. Unfortunately, test pilot J. I. Piontkovski died during one of the tests.
» Modifications were made on the second and third prototypes, which successfully eliminated almost all deficiencies. The Soviet command no longer wanted to wait and ordered serial production to begin within 4 months. Problems with cooling, structural strength, landing gear, and poor welds were to be gradually resolved during production.
» Ultimately, the simple construction of the aircraft proved to be durable and the aircraft was easy to maintain. Yakovlev 1 thus heralded the development of an entire series of other Yak-type fighter aircraft, of which more than 43,000 units were produced.
» This particular aircraft was donated to the Polish army by Stalin's personal clairvoyant Wolf Messing. Yes, you read that right, a clairvoyant. He gained popularity before the war by performing in a Berlin circus. After his performance in Vienna, a strange event occurred when he was visited by two gentlemen, none other than Sigmund Freud and Albert Einstein, who wanted to test his abilities. Messing told Freud that day: Make a wish and I will fulfill it. Then he approached Einstein and pulled out three hairs from his mustache. Was that your wish, Mr. Freud? Messing asked. Yes, Freud replied.
» Messing also predicted that if Hitler started the war, he would eventually die. This prediction angered Hitler so much that he offered a reward of 200,000 Reichsmarks for the capture of the seer. Messing was arrested after the occupation of Poland, but he used his abilities to make the guards open the cell, after which the guards locked themselves in. The clairvoyant managed to escape to the Soviet Union, where he soon fell into the favor of Joseph Stalin.
» Many scientists consider Wolf Messing to be a fraud and a charlatan. However, the truth is that according to medical records, he was endowed with an extraordinarily good memory and the ability to see in the dark.
