Interesting facts:
» When the American Air Force approached manufacturers with the requirement to design an aircraft with a minimum speed of 580 km/h at an altitude of 6,000 m, capable of taking off and landing on an unusually short runway, all companies except one refused.
» Albert Einstein once said: If something doesn't work because it's impossible, someone who doesn't know it can't be done will come along, do it, and it works. And that's exactly what the young engineer Clarence Leonard Kelly Johnson was like.
» The first flight of the P-38 took place on January 27, 1939, and it was immediately clear that this aircraft had no competition in its time.
» If a capable pilot got into the cockpit, the machine inspired deep respect in the enemy, leading the Germans to nickname it the twin-tailed devil.
» The P-38 was flown by aces with the highest number of kills among all American pilots, such as Richard Ira Bong and Thomas B. McGuire.
» Perhaps the only disadvantage of the machine was the poor visibility through the long canopy, so pilots taxied on the runway in a serpentine manner.
» After technical modifications made by Charles Lindbergh, the machine was able to better utilize fuel and increase its combat range to 2,600 km.
» The aircraft served in some armies until 1965.
» There are still 6 airworthy machines worldwide.
