M24 Chaffee is an American light tank from World War II. In the years 1944 to 1945, 4731 units were produced. It successfully replaced another light tank M3/M5 Stuart. Chaffee was equipped with welded armor, two engines, and a 75 mm cannon, which was previously designed for the B-25 Mitchell bomber. It was the first Western Allied tank to use torsion bars as suspension. Sometimes soldiers fired upon their own tanks, as the chassis of the Chaffee tank resembled German Panzer II and Panther tanks. The tank was used in battles in France, Italy, and the Third Reich. After the war, it remained in the service of the American army. It was very popular and found many buyers worldwide. The M24 was also used in the Korean War. Copies belonging to France fought in Indochina and Algeria. In the Vietnam War, they were used by the South Vietnamese army. It is said that they are still used by the Uruguayan army today!
