In every Zippo lighter, there is a fuel tank filled with special cotton, which absorbs the fuel when filled to prevent leakage, and from there the fuel wicks up through the cotton wick and evaporates into the burner. 

With use and frequent refilling of the lighter, the cotton filling slowly wears out, which over time is manifested mainly by the reduced capacity of the lighter's tank and consequently its short endurance after filling. 

In some cases, it is also necessary to replace the cotton filling after using low-quality fuel, and it may also happen that when traveling by plane, airport personnel remove the lighter's filling for safety reasons to disable its function (bringing functional lighters on board civilian aircraft is often restricted or outright prohibited).
